Our adventure on the Star of Honolulu Sunset Dinner Cruise began at the historic Aloha Tower. If you drive there yourself it's only about a twenty minute drive from Waikiki. Parking is available for a fee ($2 on weekends or hourly fees during the week) or they offer a convenient round trip shuttle bus service from Waikiki for $8. At the pier we were greeted with Aloha by a live Hawaiian band accompanied by hula dancers.

It was a beautiful day with light fluffy clouds and some small ocean swells, we knew that we were in for a beautiful sunset with an unobstructed view. We settled at our table where we ordered a couple of drinks and relaxed for a bit. Soon the engines stirred and we were under way! As we left Aloha Tower the live entertainment began to play and welcomed everyone with a warm ALOHA! The band took the time to find out if anyone on board was celebrating a birthday and sung a special "Happy Birthday" song to each person who was celebrating one. They also asked who was celebrating a honeymoon or anniversary on board and dedicated "the Hawaiian Wedding Song" to each couple celebrating. We thought this was a very nice touch.

Just after we started to head out we were served a chef salad with heart of romaine, red oak, and frisee garnish with tomato, fresh basil, and a puff pastry star with Hana papaya seed dressing. This delicious salad was followed by the scrumptious main course of bacon wrapped tenderloin steak, crab legs, steamed garden mixed vegetables, and garlic mashed potatoes. The dinner was very filling and everything was delicious! We barely had enough room for the passion fruit ice cream dessert. Throughout the dinner the band played a nice selection of soft rock and romantic songs. It made for a very relaxing and romantic start to the evening.

After dinner we went out and strolled around the decks to watch the sun set. The cruise took us around Diamond Head with beautiful views of Waikiki, Koko Head Crater, and all of South Oahu. There was a nice light breeze and we were quite comfortable wearing short sleeves. However, if you are visiting in the winter you'll want to bring along a sweater, it's always a little bit cooler out on the water.

The sunset was awesome with orange and pink tones blending into purple. The stars were starting to peek out as it got dark. Just as the sun set we heard the sounds of Hawaiian music and it was time for the Star of Honolulu "Spirit of Aloha" show. The band played Hawaiian style songs and were accompanied by dancers. Even the crew who seated and served us got into the act and was part of the show! As the band played a variety of Hawaii themed songs hula dancers entertained us with their beautiful dancing and costumes. At the end of the "Spirit of Aloha" show the band opened up the dance floor and invited everyone join in. They played several popular dance songs like a conga, hokey pokey, and electric slide to get everyone up and moving.

This was a relaxing, romantic, and fun evening. The food was fantastic and the service was just as wonderful. On this same cruise they offer several different menu options depending on the experience you would like to enjoy. For a casual atmosphere you can enjoy the steak and crab dinner like we did or they also offer a Maine lobster and steak dinner. For a more fancy dining experience you can enjoy a seven course French dinner with Jazz entertainment, a more formal attire is recommended.

We have received feedback from web site users who did went for the fancy seven course French dinner stating that about 95% of the people in their upper deck dining room was Japanese and the whole dinner show and announcements were in Japanese with some English translations. We found it to be the opposite in the lower deck casual dining room.   For reservations for any of the dinner cruises contact the Star of Honolulu at 808 983-7827. Be sure to tell them you heard about their Adventures on www.alohafriends.com

You can enjoy the steak and crab dinner cruise as we described above for $69.95 per adult/$38.95 per child plus tax, including 2 drink tickets and transportation. The Maine lobster and steak dinner cruise is $109 per adult/$58.50 per child plus tax, including 2 drink tickets and transportation. The seven course French dinner is $199.00 per person, including 5 drink tickets and transportation.  They also offer a cruise combo package for $73.27 plus tax including the Deluxe Whale Watch Cruise and the steak and crab Star Dinner Cruise.
