Explore the beauty of the Big Island by renting a car. The Big Island is HUGE
and you can travel several hundred miles just sight seeing. There are many beautiful
scenic and historic spots to stop at along your journey. Some of the popular stops
are Volcano, Volcano National Park,
Lava Forest, roadside waterfalls,
the MOST southern part of the
USA, and Waipio
Lookout. All stops offer spectacular views, bring lots of film! A car rental is about
$50 per day with most car rental companies (Avis,
Dollar, Hertz, Budget)
offering good deals for internet reservations.
Nature
walks and hikes are a fun way to get fresh air and exercise while exploring Hawaii's
amazing environments. There are several easy to access trails with easy to hard challenge
levels. This is an excellent way to get a unique perspectives of the island and explore
the Hawaii you've seen on TV and in magazines.
On top of the Mauna Kea
you can get as close to the stars as humanly possible. Explore the heavens like a
professional astronomer at the Onizuka Center
for International Astronomy. Admission is free but a four wheel drive vehicle is
required to reach the observatory on the summit of Mauna Kea.
Learn about Kamehameha the
Great at a great temple he built over 200 years ago. Admission is free to Pu'ukohala
National Historical Park.
Snorkeling allows you to
explore Hawaii's unique marine life. Rentals average about $10 a day. Prescription goggles
are available from some rental agents.
Experience the life of ancient
Hawaiians at a functioning Polynesian
Village. Free admission.
Enjoy a relaxing stroll through a beautiful orchid garden. Free
admission.
Explore a real working macadamia nut farm and
processing plant. Free admission.
Several restaurants have Hawaiian music nights where
they have live Hawaiian music for you to enjoy while you eat. No cover charge.
Catch some rays, swim in the
ocean, and relax at the beach.
Don't forget your waterproof sunscreen with an SPF above 15.
