The Hawaiian Islands are the home to rare animals that may cross the road. Please drive cautiously, especially at night. Signs are posted in areas where certain animals cross frequently. As mentioned above driving at night can be dangerous. Below is a distance table to assist you in knowing how far it is between different locations and how long it takes to get there.

Take a drive to KA LAE the SOUTHERNMOST POINT in the United States of America, the next landfall is 7500 miles away! This wild coastline has extensive archaeological sites, and is believed to be the site of the first Polynesian landings in 300 A.D. or earlier. The rocky point at Ka Lae is an overhang, and many local fishermen literally risk their lives climbing down a rope ladder to their boats anchored many feet below. SNOW SKIING IN HAWAII is actually possible during the winter months only on top of Mauna Kea! This mountain is 13,796 feet high with cold and windy conditions near the top year round and snow in the winter. Some years the "pineapple powder" is quite plentiful and makes snow sports like skiing, snow boarding, and sledding possible. There is one challenge, no ski lifts. Ski Guides Hawaii takes small groups to the top of Mauna Kea in their 4X4 and acts as your ski lift and guide. This service subject to weather conditions which changes daily so it is best to call them at 808 885-4188 once you arrive in the islands. Group Ski/Snow Board Tours are $250 per person with a 3 person minimum and includes transportation from Waimea! Ski equipment rentals are available for an additional $50 per person for skis, poles, and boots. Snowboards for an additional $50 for board and boots. The Ali'i Ski/Snowboard Tour is $450 per person with a 2 person minimum and includes VIP luncheon and equipment rentals. Keep in mind this is more about enjoying a unique experience while in paradise than "great skiing" like in Colorado. Not many people can actually say they have snow skied in Hawaii. This is for intermediate and advanced skiers only.

VOLCANO WINERY is tucked between 2 of Hawaii’s active volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kilauea, and is not an ordinary winery. It was started in 1986 and their original tropical fruit-blended wines, Symphony wines, and all-honey wine set them apart in their own category. The vineyard is located at 4,000 feet above sea level and produces over 14 acres of Symphony grapes. The winery likes to experiment with exotic local fruits along with grapes to produce wines unlike any other and a new category of wines was created because of these fruit blended wines which are now know as BATF. Volcano Winery offers free wine tasting daily 10am-5:30pm. You can call Volcano Winery for information on shipping their wines at (808) 967-7772. Driving Directions from Hilo: Take Hwy 11 towards Volcano. Turn right at the 30-milemarker onto Pii Mauna Drive. We are at the end of the road.
Distance from Hilo: 30 miles Driving Directions from Kona: If driving through South Point, take Hwy 19 South through South Point. You will then be on Hwy 11 (going North). Turn left after the 31-milemarker onto Pii Mauna Drive. We are at the end of the road. Distance from Kona: 96 miles

WAIPIO VALLEY LOOKOUT is a stop right at the entrance to a very beautiful valley. The decent into the valley is extremely steep and requires a four wheel drive vehicle. If you do not have the proper vehicle you can take a 4X4 tour of the valley with pick up at the valley entrance. The lookout is a beautiful place for a scenic stop. Waterfalls are visible across the valley and a black sand beach where the lush valley rain forest meets the sea. The valley was and is a very scared place for the Hawaiian people. Once only chiefs were allowed in the valley because it was believed to hold special powers, spirits, and wisdom. The valley is located on the North side of the island. Head north on Highway 19 from any direction. Look for signs for Waipio Valley on highway 240. Follow Highway 240 to the end.
