UPDATE: AS OF 2/2005 WE FOUND OUT THIS SERVICE WAS DISCONTINUED AND THERE IS NO LONGER ANY GO-KARTING SERVICES ON THE ISLAND OF OAHU.

Ladies and gentlemen.... Start your engines!
Ladies and gentlemen start your engines!

If you will be on Oahu and have a need for speed you will love the thrill you'll get from the Team Hawaii Karting Center go-kart racing school. Enjoy racing around a 9 turn, 660 meter, asphalt track in a NKT 135cc 2-stroke sprint racing kart. The karts are easy to operate and don't require much instruction to use. When you want to go you step on the gas and when you want to slow down or stop you step on the brake. When we arrived we suited up in a head sock (to absorb sweat), a helmet, gloves, and a windbreaker jacket (all provided by the race school) and we were ready to go!

We had used go-karts on several occasions outside of Hawaii in the past and were excited to see what more we could learn from the racing school. Before we began doing laps the instructor pointed out yellow and orange cones strategically placed around the track. If you need help the orange cones mark the apex of each turn that we were to aim for in order to get a smooth fast ride around the track. For the most efficient track time our goal was to stay close to the yellow cones and turn the steering wheel when the front tires go past each yellow cone.

We lucked out and were the only students in our session and got exclusive use of the track! We started off with a few practice laps to get used to the sensitivity of the steering and the track, and soon got in the groove of things. The instructor observed our driving and would flag us in to give us tips to improve our lap times. The track was set up really nice so we could almost floor the gas pedal for most of the track, except for the hair-pin turn.

A tight grip on the wheel and vibrations begin to take their toll on your arms and hands, so after about 20 minutes of driving we pulled in for a brief pit stop. After our break we got back on the track took turns timing laps for each other. Mike was a speed demon with the fastest lap time on the tracks' 2000 lap time sheets as of 2/12/00 at 31.56 seconds!

After each of us did our timed runs we took another brief break and then raced each other for the rest of our session. The track is narrow in most places so passing is not allowed, when someone catches up the slow guy is flagged into the pit for a slow down and the fast guy is allowed to pass.

After our race session ended we were presented with certificates of completion. We ended up enjoying an hour and a half at the racing school and most of the time was racing. We really enjoyed ourselves and felt we did learn how to get the most out of our experience on the track and improved our track times. We ended up with big smiles plastered on our face all day and kept talking about how much fun we had.

Since our Go-Karting adventure above the Go-Kart company has come under new owners. It is no longer a go-kart racing school but instead now allows people of all ages to enjoy karting. There are karts for adults which go up to 30mph and karts for kids that go15mph. There are also two seat karts for adults to accompany young children too young to drive on their own. Ride tickets are sold in 5 or 10 minute session increments. No special riding gear is needed or provided.

Reservations are not needed unless you wish to rent out the entire track. The race track is located about 45 minutes from Waikiki. From Waikiki travel West on H-1 and get off at exit 1 to get to Campbell Industrial Park. Turn left at Malakoke Street. Contact Team Hawaii Karting Center. Be sure to tell them you heard about this adventure at www.alohafriends.com

UPDATE: AS OF 2/2005 WE FOUND OUT THE TELEPHONE NUMBER WE HAD FOR THIS SERVICE WAS DISCONNECTED. WE DO NOT HAVE ANY ADDITIONAL CONTACT INFORMATION FOR THIS COMPANY AND ARE NOT AFFILIATED WITH THEM.
