Kauai is great for EXPLORING BY CAR. The streets are clearly marked and the island is not very big, making it very easy to get around. There is a series of highways that almost make 3/4  around the perimeter. It does not connect to make a full circle though, so once you reach the end of the highway you must turn around and go back the way you came. (With the amazing scenic beauty around the entire island, it is a pleasure to be able to see it again!) Many parts of Kauai are not accessible by car, an Air Adventure is the only way to see much of Kauai. It’s a good idea to pick up a few soft drinks and snacks for your driving adventures because you just never know where your adventure will take you, or if you will be near a restaurant. Be sure to keep your gas tank above half full. (Tip: There are many rest stops with bathrooms around the island. It is a good idea to have your own supply of tissue in case they run out.)

TRAIN MUSEUM- the Laupahoehoe Train Museum and Visitors Center stands on the site of the old Laupahoehoe Train Station and showcases photos, memorabilia and stories of when the trains were a important part of transportation on the Big Island. The Hamakua portion of the railway which spanned numerous gulches and water crossings is known as the most expensive section of railway built in America in its time. Much of the railway was washed away in the tidal wave of 1946 but many of the current highway bridges on the Hamakua Coast were built on original railway trestle foundations. A RR-Xing sign on Highway 19 along the Hamakua Coast marks the museum. For more information call (808) 962-6300.
