NIIHAU is the small island across the Kaulakohi Channel off Kauai’s west coast. The island is 18 miles long and 6 miles wide. It is owned by the Robinson Family who are direct descendants of the Sinclair family who bought the island from King Kamehameha V. Only 250 people presently populate the island and unique dialect of Hawaiian is spoken almost exclusively. Almost all residents work for the Robinson's’ by running the cattle and sheep ranch, making charcoal from Kiawe (mesquite) trees, gathering honey, and making leis from rare Niihau shells. Life is very simple here, there are no guns, liquor, jail, telephones, sewers, or electricity. Entry is not permitted.

RIVER KAYAK ADVENTURES are a fun way to sightsee and get a unique perspective of the islands. River kayaking is relaxing and great for beginners since it’s not as challenging as open-ocean kayaking can be when currents are strong. Because Kauai is the oldest of the Hawaiian Islands time and erosion have created four rivers that can be explored by kayak.
The Hanalei River is the longest of the four rivers, 7 ½ miles round trip, offering a peaceful adventure through plains. After a heavy rain waterfalls can be seen cascading down the sheer mountain cliffs. The start of the river is on the north side of the island off route 56.
The scenic views along the Wailua River are breathtaking making it the most popular river for kayaking, but can be crowded at times. Along the 2.5 mile long river is the north fork of the river where a waterfall can be easily accessed after a short hike. The main fork of the Wailua River leads to the Fern Grotto. The Wailua River is also utilized by motorized boats so stay to the north side to keep out of their way. The start of the river is on the east side of the island off route 51.
The Kalihiwai River is a short adventure, under a mile, starting at Kalihiwai Beach . There is beautiful scenery everywhere you look and a waterfall off in the distance. The start of the river is on the north side of the island off route 56 between Kilauea and Hanalei.
The Huleia River in Lihue is 5 miles round trip and takes you from the Nawiliwili Harbor out past the Menehune Fish Ponds and the area where the scene was filmed from Raiders of the Lost Ark where Indiana Jones tries to escape head hunters by swinging on vines to an awaiting sea plane. This river flows through a wildlife refuge and is a great area for bird watching.

The NA PALI COASTLINE is a pristine, isolated, 15-miles of 4,000-foot sea cliffs and powdery beaches that can only be seen by helicopter or boat tour. After a rain the crevices in the sea cliffs drizzle waterfalls into the ocean. The Na Pali coast will stun you with its’ beauty. Because of its' isolation this area was used by some Hawaiians as a refuge and artifacts of these people still remain. Some boat tours land on shore and take you on a hike to explore village ruins. SNORKELING allows you to enter into the amazing world of the ocean and explore the incredible creatures that live in it. Some find snorkeling a bit scary at first because it is weird to have your face under water and still be able to breathe. It is very easy to get used to and opens a whole new world to you! Bring your own equipment for under $10 for a 24hr rental. Be sure to make a disposable underwater camera part of your equipment!!! Do not feed the fish, human food is not healthy to ocean creatures and it also causes the fish to frenzy. The best way to see the creatures is to just float and observe them doing what they naturally do. There is A LOT to see! Be a good reef visitor by not touching or taking marine life. Watch where your hands and fins are so you do not step on corals (live reef building animals) or other animals. WEAR WATERPROOF SUN SCREEN ABOVE 15 SPF!!! If your lotion is not waterproof you will burn badly! The sun is strongest 11-3. Limit your time in the direct sun to a 2 hour max. Snorkeling hot spots: Lydgate Park is great for beginners. Other great spots are Poipu Beach Park on the South shore, Tunnels Reef on the North Shore, and Salt Pond on the Southwest shore. Due to rough sea conditions and large waves, snorkeling is typically not available during the winter months on the North shore.

SNORKEL EQUIPMENT- Snorkel Bob has the best gear at the best prices and they even have masks with Rx lenses. Snorkel mask and gear ranges between $9-$29 per week for rentals. Rx lens snorkel masks with gear rentals is $39 per week. Snorkel Bob's is located in Koloa and Kapa'a on Kauai and is open 8am-5pm daily. For the Koloa location call 808 742-2206 or for the Kapa'a location call 808 823-9433 for more information and reservations.

SNUBA DIVING combines the ease of snorkeling with the continuous underwater breathing ability of Scuba diving. Snuba is a simple system that connects you and a companion to an inflatable raft that tows along the surface, supporting your air tank. Snuba allows you to safely dive 25-40 minutes up to a depth of 20 feet. For anyone 8 and over. Snuba Tours of Kauai offers guided Snuba adventures off Lawai Beach with groups of 8 or less. $59 per person including mask, booties, fins, and wet suit (if needed). For an additional $25 they will video tape you and your adventure. Call Snuba Tours of Kauai at 808 823-8912 for more information and reservations.

SPORT FISHING: If you’ve dreamed of reeling in the biggest catch of your life the Pacific Ocean is the place to be. We recommend boats that will agree to any request to release billfish and will also allow you to take some of the catch home. The preservation of the Hawaiian fishing grounds is an important concern and fishermen releasing unneeded catch is a part in this preservation. The most popular sport fish caught around the Hawaiian Islands are Pacific Blue Marlin, Striped Marlin, Bigeye Tuna, Skipjack Tuna, Black Marlin, Broadbill Swordfish, Shortbill Spearfish, Pacific Sailfish, Dolphinfish, Wahoo, and Yellowfin Tuna. It is a fact that all fishing places, however fantastic they are, cannot guarantee that you will catch fish. When you charter a boat you are paying for is the opportunity to catch a large fish and the story of a lifetime. The Kona area of the Big Island is known to have the best catch rates in the islands, especially during mating season (April-August). Dress comfortably and prepare for direct sun exposure. There will be a place to retreat from the sun on the boat but don’t neglect the sunscreen! A waterproof spf 30 or better. T-shirts and shorts, a light hat, polarized sunglasses, and deck shoes or sneakers are fine for a day on the water. For most boats you are asked to bring all of your food and drink aboard with you. Canned drinks, and some light snacks and sandwiches are a good idea. All boats will have fresh water, ice, and a way to keep your stuff cold aboard. There is a Hawaiian superstition that absolutely, positively, no bananas go on a fishing trip!  It is considered to be unlucky to have bananas or anything with banana in it on a boat in Hawaii. Ask your skipper more about this Hawaiian kapu.
