The Hawaiian word keiki (pronounced kay-key) is used to mean child or
children for both boys and/or girls. This page contains tips for anyone visiting Hawaii
with keiki. These tips are provided to assist in creating a Hawaiian vacation everyone
will enjoy! Don't miss our Parents Survival Kit suggestions...
FAMILY
ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS
Hawaii offers activities to educate and entertain your entire family. When planning your
activities keep in mind how things will be from the perspective of your keiki. Since keiki
are unpredictable it is best to create a list of "must do" activities but have a
flexible itinerary. Our site offers island specific activities that indicate if there is
any age restrictions and if there is a discount for children. |
SO
WHAT DO KIDS WANT TO DO ANYWAY? We
corresponded with a 3rd grade class on the East Coast to help them find out more about
life about Hawaii. After several letter exchanges the class of 8-9 year olds shared with
us what they would want to enjoy if they could visit Hawaii. We hope it helps you to plan
activities your keiki will enjoy! |

BABES
IN PARADISE
We often receive emails from people planning a visit to Hawaii with the
family and want suggestions of activities to enjoy with children under 2. There are many
options on each island that the entire family will enjoy. Most activity providers do not
have any restrictions on bringing babies as long as someone in your party is willing to
stay with and be responsible for the baby during the activity. Some may also charge for
the baby to attend if they take up a space with a baby seat or stroller. Below are few
specific activities suggestions that may interest you and your child/children under 2.
On any island: sight seeing
driving tour, beach, lunch or dinner cruise, submarine ride, hiking through rainforest and
to waterfalls (if you bring or rent a baby back pack)
Oahu: Childrens
Discovery Center, Honolulu Zoo, Waikiki Aquarium, Sea Life Park, Waimea Falls Park,
Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park
Maui: drive down to Hana
and up to the summit of Mt Haleakala, Hawaii Ocean Center, Hawaii Nature Center
Big Island: glass bottom
boat ride, draft horse wagon tour
Kauai: Butterfly Ranch
What we recommend doing is reviewing the island specific activity options on our web site
to create a list of what interests you. Once youve created your list re-look at it
and consider which of the activities will you really be able to realistically enjoy with
the baby in tow. For infants and toddlers we do not recommend activities that will require
keiki to keep still or be quiet for long periods of time like bus tours of the island,
memorials like the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, Polynesian Cultural Center, fancy
restaurants, and movies. |
PARENTS
ISLAND SURVIVAL KIT
We recommend parents take the following items on their island adventures
to make it more enjoyable:
Any stuffed animal or blanket
that a child is extremely attached to. Your vacation in Hawaii is not the best time to see
if your keiki can make it through the night without their favorite bed time snuggle item.
Be sure to pack it!
Coloring or activity books and
crayons- this is good to have on the plane, in restaurants, and on long car rides.
A stroller and a backpack carrier
are great items to bring for infants and toddlers.
Car seats are required by law for
all children under the age of 4. Rather than bringing yours from home it will probably be
easier to just rent one from the place you are renting your car from. Seat belts are
required by law and are to be worn by everyone in a vehicle over the age of 4.
Pain relief for headaches- after
a busy day you may need it.
Dramamine is a must for anyone
who gets motion sickness in cars, planes, or boats. It is available in children and adult
doses. Ginger candy or ginger tablets also work well for motion sickness.
Children's night time cough
medicine- a few parents who travel have told us they give their child a small dose to get
them to sleep on long plane rides. Use your discretion.
Snacks and beverages- In remote
parts of the islands general stores often charge a premium price. For better prices pick
up your snacks from stores in the larger cities before heading out on your adventures.
Handi wipes- they are perfect for
a quick clean up and they now come in antibacterial.
Tissue or toilet paper- Just in
case the rest stops are out. There are many public restrooms available at public beaches
and parks around the island.
Small first aid kit- It is easy
to get a cut or scrape while having the time of your life. Handy first aid items to bring
are antiseptic wipes and band aids.
Sunscreen- Is a must. Children
have more sensitive skin and should use WATERPROOF lotion with SPF above 25. Adults should
use waterproof lotion with SPF of 15 or more.
Disposable cameras for each
child- this is a great way to keep the keiki interested in what is going on around them.
They are able to save memories of their vacation from their own perspective. You can also
have fun with you keiki by creating a scrap book of your Hawaiian vacation memories after
you return and have the photos developed!
Map- free maps are provided when
you rent your car. Don't stress out if you end up off the beaten path. You are on an
island and there is no way you can end up lost beyond hope. Just relax and enjoy paradise.
Sense of humor- kids will be kids
and there is nothing worth ruining your entire vacation over. As we say in the islands,
just hang loose! |
KIDS
CAMPS AND NANNY/BABYSITTING SERVICES are good resources if you are
traveling on business, if the grown ups need time alone, or if you want to enjoy an
activity your keiki are too young to participate in. Please note that there have been
instances where visitors have locked their young children in the hotel room while the
adults went out and enjoyed themselves. This has resulted in tragic misfortunes and is not
acceptable. NANNY SERVICES

wide in-room baby sitting service. Their nannies are licensed
and insured. Call 808 875-4777 for more information.

KIDS CAMPS
Hotels island
wide offer a day camp where children ages 5-12 can enjoy activities like
snorkeling, arts & crafts, and day trips. Some of the day camps do not require that
you be a guest to enroll your keiki in their program. Contact the hotels directly for
prices and more information on their services. Prices start around $50 per day per keiki.
Some of the hotels that offer a day camp are the Sheraton Waikiki (Oahu), Hilton Hawaiian
Village (Oahu), Ritz Carlton Kapalua (Maui), Westin Maui (Maui), Grand Wailea (Maui), and
the Hilton Waikoloa (Big Island). Inquire at your hotel to see if they offer such a
service. |

keiki.

DINNER
TIME
A great idea to keep your keiki occupied while waiting to be seated or waiting for your
food is bring along crayons, coloring books, or activity books.
If the keiki are too rambunctious to go to a restaurant for dinner one evening a fun
alternative is to enjoy a picnic dinner on the beach, in a park, or in your hotel room.
There are traditional take out restaurants, like McDonalds and plate lunch places, around
all the islands. More upscale restaurants also usually offer a take out menu and many
hotels offer room service. |
