EXPLORING BY CAR is a great way to see the many diverse eco-systems of Maui. There are tropical rain forests and waterfalls, sunny beaches and beautiful flowers, ranches and cacti, lush valleys, and a large dormant volcano. When driving, please watch for wildlife that may cross the road, especially at night. There are signs that mark frequent animal crossing locations. If you make purchases place them in the trunk for safe keeping. Watch your gas gauge and refuel at ˝ a tank. There are public bathrooms at most parks found around the island. They are usually pretty clean, but bring tissue just in case they are out. There aren’t many food stops around many parts of the island so bring snacks and soft drinks to enjoy on your adventures. For island specific suggestions on where to go car cruisin' visit www.alohafriends.com/ptcruiser.html

DRIVE to the TOP OF HALEAKALA for a view above airplanes and the clouds. Haleakala means House of the Sun. At the summit 10,300 feet above sea level you can look into it’s three-mile-deep chasm. Sunrise or sunset views are spectacular making for an awesome experience. You will find rare plants and animals that make Haleakala their home. As you ascend the winding road up the volcano you will feel the change in air pressure in your ears, feeling compressed. Just yawn to relieve the pressure. The air also gets thinner as you ascend. It takes one hour to reach the summit when leaving from Kahului, 1-˝ hours from Kihei, and 2 hours from Lahaina. Make sure you have a full tank of gas, warm clothes to put on (it is COLD at the summit), your camera and plenty of film, and snacks/soft drinks for the journey. Directions: from the Kahului Airport follow highway 37, Haleakala Highway, going Southeast. Stay on Haleakala Highway and follow signs to the summit or to the Silverswords. Park infoline 572-4400.

DRIVE TO UPCOUNTRY MAUI by Haleakala Highway 37. Makawao is an old cowboy town where you can still see hitchin’ posts and a few cowboys among many unique restaurants and shops. The Tedeschi Winery is located in this area and gives tours by appointment, call 808 878-6058 to arrange one. There is also wine tasting and a museum at King Kalakaua’s Cottage in Kula. In this area along highway 37 and 377 you will find several public gardens, flower & produce farms, restaurants, and shops.

DRIVE THE ROAD TO HANA - a 53-mile one way driving adventure down a winding ocean cliff highway that takes you through tropical rain forest, past several waterfalls, and lots of beautiful scenic views. There are many photo opportunities of scenic overlooks, waterfalls, exotic flowers, and tropical fruit trees. If you get hungry on your drive there are several grass shack roadside fruit stands and even a smoothie stand that will tempt your taste buds with fresh pineapple, papaya, bananas, home baked fruit breads, and more. There aren't many grocery stores so it is best to stop in Pa'ia to pick up refreshments for your adventure. A great place to get a hamburger or sandwich for lunch in Hana is the grill at the Hana Ranch Restaurant. Across the street from the Hana Ranch Restaurant is Hasagawa General Store where you can restock on refreshments. Continue past the town of Hana for beautiful views of mountain ranch land and ocean cliffs. There is a wonderful hiking trail to seven waterfall pools at Ohe'o Gulch in Haleakala National Park at Kipahulu where you can even swim in waterfall pools. One of the waterfalls falls 400 feet!  This is a 2-3 hour hike with many great photo opportunities. Mosquito repellent, water, a snack, and closed toe shoes are recommended. If you are staying in the Lahaina or Kahului area we recommend starting your driving adventure no later than 9am. It is about a 3 hour driving adventure from the Kahului Airport to Ohe'o Gulch, you can then hike for 2-3 hours, and/or then drive 2-3 hours back. Directions: from the Kahului Airport follow highway 37 going Southeast. Turn left onto highway 365. Turn right onto highway 36 and follow to it to Hana. For more details on what you can see and do on the road to Hana see/print out our list of Adventures on the Road to Hana.

Pod of whales near a whale watching boat photographed from a roadside lookout between Ma’alaea Harbor and Lahaina.

WHALE WATCHING is a popular past time from December to April. Approximately 2,000 Humpback whales migrate from Alaska to the Hawaiian Islands  to mate and give birth each year. That is estimated to be half the population of Humpback whales in the Pacific. The most frequent sightings on Maui are between Makena and Kapalua on the North-West and South-West sides of the island. Whales can be spotted from roadside lookouts, they may  come very close to shear sea cliffs. We saw a mother and calf from a roadside lookout in Lahaina! Boat tours for whale watches are also available.

FREE WHALE AND OCEAN INFORMATION at MacGregor Point Lookout on route 30 (Honoapiilani Highway) between Lahaina and Kihei . You can pull off the highway and see whale artifacts and interesting whale displays. Pacific Whale Foundation's Ocean Outreach Van is at this scenic lookout area daily from December 15 through May 1, 8am to 4pm. Pacific Whale Foundation's Marine Research Naturalists will be on hand to help you spot whales from one of the best shore-based whale watching locations on Maui. For information, call (808) 879-8860.
