On Molokai there are no
buildings taller than a coconut tree. This island is very country-like with wide open
ranges and even a working cattle ranch. It is apparent very quickly why this is
called the "Friendly Isle". Almost everyone smiles and waves as you drive
or walk past. Molokai's population is a small close knit community numbering less than
2,300. There is very little crime on this small island. It's the kind of place
where you can still leave your doors unlocked at night. Molokai has the
largest population of persons of native Hawaiian ancestry of any of the islands.
Hawaiian words are often mixed in everyday English conversation. The people of Molokai are
very knowledgeable and proud of Molokai's unique history. Many residents still enjoy
providing for themselves in traditional Hawaiian ways with home taro patches and gardens
of fruits and vegetables. They also fish and dive for fishes and lobster as well as hunt
feral deer, goats, pigs and fowl for fresh meat.
Molokai was once known as the
Lonely Isle due to people who broke sacred laws were banished to Molokai. In the 1860's
immigrant workers from China brought leprosy to the islands and it spread rapidly.
Kamehameha V decided to isolate the people of Hawaii who became infected in Kalaupapa, a
remote part of Molokai. Since Molokai has no natural harbors the boats would sail into the
bay near Kalaupapa peninsula and throw the people with leprosy in the very rough waters to
swim to shore. Those who survived often starved to death. Father Damien, a Belgian priest,
arrived in Kalaupapa to assist the lepers in 1873. For 16 years he worked and lived
among the lepers wrapping sores, making coffins, and praying over graves. At the age of 49
Father Damien died of leprosy himself.
The East Side of the island is
less dry and has the best snorkeling from the beach at Mile 20. The Northern side is only
accessible by boat or plane. It has the steepest sea cliffs in the world over 1,000
feet tall and hundreds of other waterfalls that can be seen weeping from the cliffs in the
lush valleys. The West side is best known for Papohaku, the longest white sand beach in
Hawaii and one of the most beautiful beaches we have ever seen. In the shallow waters of
the South side are ancient fish ponds, some of which have been restored and are again in
use.
Missionaries began arriving to the
island in the 1830 and brought cattle and sheep with them to ranch. Later the
pineapple became the most important feature of the island's agriculture. In the 1980's the
two main companies involved with the pineapple production closed their operations. This
was a devastating economic blow to the islanders. To secure a stronger future the
agricultural base has since diversified and limited tourism is being developed.
Molokai is a place you can really
relax get a feel for what it was like during simpler times.
