COFFEES OF HAWAII WAGON TOUR is an excursion through a working coffee plantation. DAMIEN TOURS offers the only Kalaupapa tour service operated by patients still living at the former leper colony. Visit the site where Father Damien worked among the lepers, Mother Marianne's grave, and enjoy the spectacular scenery. Reservations: Richard Marks, 808 567-617, 7-9am and 5-7pm.

HALAWA FALLS GUIDED CULTURAL HIKE gives you access to Hawaii’s natural beauty. Let this sacred  place astound you as you learn of Halawa's history. Hike to the famous Moaula Falls with cultural guides Pilipo and Kawaimaka. $25 per adult, $15 per child. Reservations: 808 553-4355.

MOLOKAI CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL TOURS can take you on a walk into "old" Hawaii and experience traditional Hawaiian practices. Reservations: 808 558-8314

A HORSE or WAGON RIDE on Molokai is like traveling back in time. On a journey that begins at Mapulehu Mango Grove you will can choose from a personalized horseback adventures or horse-drawn wagon tour to Ili'ili'opae, one of the largest remaining ancient Hawaiian temples in the islands. Capture the essence of old Hawaii. Wagon ride is $35 per person, minimum of 6 people maximum of 20 people. Horseback riding $40 per person for 1 1/2 hours of riding. Reservations: 808 558-8132

MOLOKAI MULE RIDE offers you one of the island's most spectacular scenic tours. Ride sure-footed mules down the Kalaupapa Trail to join with Damien Tours. Adventure through Kalaupapa National Historical Park and the isolated Kalaupapa community which was the site of Father Damien's ministry. Tours include entry into park and a picnic lunch and are offered daily except Sundays. $150 per person. Reservations: 800 567-7550, 808 567-6088, 808 567-9269

MOLOKAI MUSEUM & CULTURAL CENTER is on the National Register of Historic Places as the restored R.W. Meyer Sugar Mill built in 1878. The Annual Molokai Music Festival is held here. Guided tours are offered Mon-Sat 10am - 2pm. Reservations: 808 567-6436.

THE NATURE CONSERVANCY OF HAWAII offers monthly guided hiking tours of Kamakou Preserve, Mo'omomi Sand Dunes, and Pelekunu Valley. Call  808 553 5236 for more information and rates.

NENE O MOLOKAI is a nonprofit facility for breeding and preservation of Hawaii's State Bird, the endangered Nene (Hawaiian goose). Free educational tour 9am daily. Call 808 553-5992 for more information and reservations.

PURDY'S NATURAL MACADAMIA NUT FARM offers free tours of their 70 year-old macadamia nut farm. Mac nuts, honey, and other goodies are for sale in their gift shop. Open Mon-Fri 9:30am - 3:30pm, Sat 10am - 2pm, Sun by appointment. Reservations: 808 567-6601

OTHER POINTS OF INTEREST

The FIRST CATHOLIC CHURCH of Molokai is located near Kamalo. This tiny church was the first Catholic Church built on Molokai with the exception of Father Damien's mission at Kalaupapa.

HALAWA VALLEY was once the center of Molokai. This beautiful valley contains the site of ancient heiau and two plunging waterfalls, Moaula Falls and Hipuapua Falls.

ILIILIOPAE HEIAU is on National Register of Historic Places because it is one of the largest heiau in Hawaii. This heiau is 320 feet long and 120 feet wide and was a site of human sacrifice. It is on private land and may be visited with permission.

KALAUPAPA is one of the most isolated and beautiful communities in the world. This is where Father Damien once ministered and cared for those stricken with leprosy. Kalaupapa is now designated a National historical Park. Access is only by air or mule train down a 1,600-foot switchback trail.

KALAUPAPA BY PLANE is the fastest and easiest way to get to Kalauapapa from Honolulu or Maui. From the Kalaupapa airport you can take a tour of Kalaupapa. Father Damien Tours, at  808 567-6171, will pick you up at Kalaupapa airport and takes you to some of the area's most scenic spots including to where Father Damien's church still stands as well as the town of Kalaupapa.  Molokai-Lanai Air Shuttle at 808 567-6847 offers service from Molokai Airport in Hoolelua to the Kalaupapa Airport. If you would like to go to Molokai for the day the Maui-based Paragon Air at 808 244-3356 offers a $225 package deal, which includes airfare from Kahului Airport on Maui to Kalaupapa, a 4-hour tour, lunch and drinks. All visitors must be at least 16 years old.

KAMAKOU is the highest elevation on the island of Molokai at 4,790 feet. This is the site of the Nature Conservancy's 2,700-acre Kamakou Preserve with rare plants and birds.

KAPUAIWA GROVE was planted in the 1860's by Kamehameha V. This grove has more than 1,000 coconut trees covering 10 acres of land near Kaunakakai.

KAWELA CITY OF REFUGE is 200 feet up a ridge separating two gulches. There are Menehune walls and salt vats from the reign of Kamehameha V in the area.

pineapple.gif (1156 bytes)MAUNALOA is a former Dole plantation town with quaint buildings and shops selling works by Molokai artists and craftsmen.

MOLOKAI MUSEUM & CULTURAL CENTER was the home of the R.W. Meyers Sugar Mill. It was built in 1878 by Meyer at his Kalae home site.

MOANUI SUGAR MILL is the ruins of an old sugar mill which operated from 1870 to 1900. It can still be seen on the road to Halawa Valley.

ONE ALII PARK is a country beach park equipped with restroom facilities, outdoor shower, grills and picnic tables. One of only two parks on Molokai where camping is permitted.

PALAAU PARK is a state park overlooking Kalaupapa Peninsula. Palaau has well-equipped picnic grounds and winding trails.

PUKUHIWA BATTLEGROUND is where canoes lined the shore for four miles during a major battle in Kamehameha I's campaign to unite all the islands under one rule. Piles of sling stones from the battle can still be found in this area.
