A great patriotic adventure is to visit Pearl Harbor and tour the Arizona
Memorial, the USS Missouri, and the USS Bowfin. You can drive to these adventures
on your own, there are shuttle transportation services to these adventures, or tours
including transportation are also available. It will cost less than $30 per person for
this all day patriotic adventure.
There are no private beaches in the
Hawaiian Islands and there are hundreds of miles of beach just on the island of Oahu.
Catch some rays, swim in the ocean, or just relax at the beaches
on different parts of the island for a unique experience each time.
Golf is available for under $20 a
round at the Kahuku
Golf Course.
Narrated walking tour of
historical downtown Honolulu to view landmarks like Iolani
Palace, the Mission
House museum, the King Kamehameha Statue, and other historic landmarks. Many of
the buildings still used in the Honolulu Harbor area were constructed by early merchant
ship and missionary settlers. The Mission
House Museum offers walking tours for only $25 per adult, $15 per child.
Nature
walks and hikes are a fun way to get fresh air and exercise while exploring
Hawaii's amazing environments. There are hundreds of easy to access state trails with easy
to moderate challenge levels. This is an excellent way to get a unique perspectives of the
island and explore the Hawaii you've seen on TV and in magazines. Most trails are free to
use or have a nominal usage fee. Popular trails include Diamond Head
Summit Trail, Lyon Arboretum Waterfall Trail, Makapuu
Light House Trail, Tantalus
Trails, Maunawili Falls Trail, Kapena
Falls Trail, and the Manoa Falls
Trail.
Several restaurants have Hawaiian
music nights where they have live Hawaiian music for you to enjoy while you eat.

Kualoa Ranch Movie
Tour goes to locations used for TV shows and
movies like Magnum P.I., Jurassic Park, Godzilla 2000, Mighty Joe Young, Pearl Harbor, and
WindTalkers. The film locations are located in a breathtaking valley with lots of great
photo opportunities! The basic guided tour is $19 plus tax per person.
Queen Emma
Summer Palace holds an impressive collection of
personal artifacts that belonged to the Hawaiian Royal Family. Admission is $4 for adults,
children $4.
Snorkeling
allows you to explore Hawaii's unique marine life. Rentals average about $10 a day.
Prescription goggles are available from some rental agents.
Another great patriotic adventure is the US Army
Museum located in Waikiki at Ft. DeRussy, tells the
interesting and important roll Hawaii has played in W.W.I, W.W.II, Vietnam War, Korean
War, and in keeping the US safe from invasion. There are heart touching stories of heroes
from Hawaii who served America in many wars. Admission is free, donations
appreciated.
The
Hawaiian Railway Society operates train rides
on the original OR&L main line. The 13 mile adventure from the Ewa station to
Paradise Cove and back takes about 90 minutes. There
is also a train museum,
a gift shop, and a picnic area. Rides are $10 for adults; $7 for children 2
to 12 and seniors 62 and older; and free for children under 2.
The Waikiki
Aquarium and the Honolulu Zoo are both world class living museums. Both at the
Diamond Head end of Waikiki and are only a 5 minute walk apart. We recommend going to the
Honolulu first in the morning when the animals in the Zoo are most active before it gets
too hot. Rates for the Waikiki Aquarium are $9
per adult 18 or older, $4 per youth 13-17, $2 per child 5-12. Rates for the Honolulu
Zoo are $8 ages 13 and over, $1 ages 6-12.
If you or
anyone in your party has a Military ID the Hale Koa Hotel has several ways to help you
enjoy yourself and save money. The Military Hotel has a PX located on the premises which
is stocked with lots of items, including Hawaii souvenirs and cigarettes, at the cheapest
prices available. They also offer several restaurants and three great evening dinner
shows at very reasonable rates. Their luau, Polynesian Revue, and a magic show are fun
ways to enjoy your evenings. You do not have to be staying at the hotel to enjoy the
Military benefits available, you only require a Military ID to purchase anything at the
Hotel, except from the snack bar.
Renting a car will
give you the freedom to explore and get to more remote areas of the island. Driving around
the island of Oahu is an all day adventure accounting for lots of stops along the way to
enjoy the beautiful scenic views. A car rental averages less than $50 per day including
gas.
While exploring the island by car you
will encounter roadside fruit stands. These are great places to pick up fresh pineapple,
papaya, coconut and other freshly grown island fruits at really great prices. If you want
to enjoy the pineapple while you are on the road ask the vendor to slice it up for you.
Most vendors will do this for free or just a dollar extra charge. Please note you can not
take fresh whole fruits or flowers purchased from the roadside in Hawaii to other states
or countries due to agriculture restrictions. The fruit must be cut up to transport them
out of Hawaii.
Scooter/Mopeds are amazingly
easy to operate and are a fun way to check out Honolulu. You must be at least 18 years
old, have a valid drivers license, and $18-$25 a day to rent a moped/scooter.
The city bus
is an inexpensive way to get around Waikiki and Honolulu destinations like Ala Moana
Shopping Center, Aloha Tower, Diamond Head Crater, Historic Downtown Honolulu. Please note
you can not bring luggage or large bags on the bus. The fair is $2 per adult, $1 per
school aged child.
Trolley rides are narrated and
stops at historic landmarks and popular shopping centers. Rates are about $25 for a one day adult pass, $12 for a one day
child pass. There is also a 4 day pass that is about $45 for an adult pass and $18 for a
child pass.
