Removing of the roasted pig from the underground oven called an imu This is an example of typical food served at island luaus

A LUAU is an all evening event. Some allow you to join in on Hawaiian games and crafts, and explore cultural exhibits, as well as a Hawaiian buffet and an entertaining Polynesian review.   Many display the removal of the Kalua pig from the `imu, underground oven, where the pig was cooking for a day. Food served at most luaus include tender pig, teriyaki beef, mahi-mahi fish, chicken longrice (it looks like bait, but it's rice noodles in chicken broth with chicken pieces), white rice, poi, sweet potato, rolls, pineapple, and either coconut cake or haupia which is coconut pudding. Don’t eat too much coconut. ( It's a natural laxative.) Enjoy pineapple and papaya after meals to assist with digestion. And if you eat too much try a gingersnap or ginger candy or drink a ginger ale. Ginger is a natural way to soothe an upset stomach. There are several to choose from. Some are an all day affair, use your time in the islands wisely. Normally 5-9pm. The prices range from roughly $45-$60.

HALE KOA LUAU is available to Military personnel and their guests and is located at beautiful Waikiki Beach. As you arrive you are greeted with a lei. Then join in on flower lei making and coconut frond weaving before dinner. They feature a royal court and a traditional ceremony of removing the pig from the imu, underground oven. The mouthwatering menu includes lomi lomi salmon, Kalua pig, teriyaki beef, shoyu chicken, mahi mahi, fresh fruits, and poi. You will be entertained by beautiful Hawaiian music and graceful hula dancers. Two drinks are included with dinner. This is an exceptional value for $29.50 per person, one member of the party must have a valid military id. The luau is held on Monday and Thursday evenings. Call 808 955-0555 for current rates and ticket information. If you are looking for a smaller luau this a great one. They usually have 600 or less in attendance compared to over 1,000 at the other luaus.
