This activity receives our personal recommendation!RENTAL CAR- We suggest renting a car to allow you to explore outside of Waikiki more freely. Plan your time wisely so all activities you need a car for are in consecutive days so you will only have to rent a car for the days you actually need it. Also keep in mind  the Bus is good for getting around Waikiki and Honolulu and there are shuttles that go directly to certain attractions for no charge or a small fee. Most renal companies are charging about $40/day for mid size car and $55/day for a Mustang convertible. Ask the rental agent what type of discounts they offer (AAA member discount, corporate discount, multi-day rental discount, etc.) Parking in Waikiki can be a hassle. Check if your hotel offers free parking or if they charge a per-day parking fee. Fuel prices are about $4.00 per gallon at the pumps and are even higher at the car rental companies if you don’t refuel the rental car before you return it. Don’t make that mistake.

PLEASE NOTE: Some rental companies will not rent a car to anyone under 25. But if you are under 25, and you have a major credit card, you are able to rent a car through Enterprise and Budget Rental Car companies. Enterprise has the best rates and they do not charge any additional fees if you are at least 21. A Chevrolet Cavalier is $28 for a 24-hour rental. Budget Rental Car rents to people under 25 but adds an additional $20 a day surcharge making it $48 per day for their Ford Escort. It is worth the price for the freedom you will have to explore the remote parts of the islands!!!

Rainbow over Ala Wai Harbor

THE BUS- the city bus is a great way to get to  Waikiki and Honolulu destinations. We do not recommend the city bus to explore outside of Waikiki/Honolulu because it is a very slow way to get anywhere. Keep in mind how valuable your time is. It is $2 per adult, $1 per school aged child. Monthly passes are $40 for adults, $20 for children. Visitor 4-Day passes are $20. For more information about exploring Oahu using the bus visit www.thebus.org

This activity receives our personal recommendation!MOPEDS are amazingly easy to operate and are a fun way to check out Honolulu. Our favorite moped destinations are to Tantalus/Rountop Drive, Diamond Head, and site seeing around Honolulu. Sunscreen is a must if riding during the day, even if it's cloudy, because you will BURN!! It gets chilly riding after the sun sets so you will need a light jacket if driving at night. Mopeds are NOT for driving around the island, it takes too long and you will be directly exposed to the sun for too long! You must be at least 18 years old, have a valid drivers license, and $18-$25 a day to rent a moped/scooter. Rentals available on the side of the road in Waikiki as well as are provided by:

Exploring Oahu by CAR gives you an opportunity to see Oahu outside of the very metropolitan Waikiki/Honolulu area. Oahu has great beaches, tourist attractions, shopping, and natural beauty to explore. We recommend renting a car to explore the more tropical side and less populated parts. There are public bathrooms at most beach parks found around the island. They are usually pretty clean, but bring tissue just in case they are out. Tour companies also offer narrated bus tours if you prefer to have someone else do the driving. For island specific suggestions on where to go car cruisin' visit www.alohafriends.com/ptcruiser.html

This activity receives our personal recommendation!CIRCLE ISLAND DRIVE is a connection of Highways that cross to create a circle of roads around most of Oahu. They allow you to get to more remote parts of the island where you will see the Hawaii you dreamed about. From Waikiki: to get on the highway go all the way down Kapahulu Avenue (next to the Zoo). Follow the signs to and get on H1 West. Stay on H1 until the H2 junction. Continue on H2, it will turn into Route 99. This is where you will find the Dole Pineapple Plantation. At the next junction take Route 83. You can either drive through the town of Haleiwa (there are stores, restaurants, and gas stations) or take the by-pass. If you are in this area on the weekends and are hungry for lunch or dinner take a drive through Haleiwa and keep a nose out for the mouth watering smell of Huli-Huli chicken for sale by a roadside vendor. (Huli means turn) You can’t miss it; the smell will actually make your mouth water. This is the best chicken we have ever tasted! The chickens are rotisserie style cooked over a open pit of kiawe, a mesquite wood, which gives it a very yummy flavor. It’s about $8 a chicken and you can ask them to cut it up for you for an extra dollar so it is finger size food. It is finger licking good! After your snack continue on Route 83 for the next 35-40 miles. You will pass many scenic stops ideal for picture taking. Once  you enter the town of Kaneohe you will come to a junction with Route 61. Turn right onto the Pali Highway. Take the Pali Lookout turn off shortly after you get on the highway. The lookout offers information on plaques about an historic battle that took place in the Nuuanu Valley as well as a breathtaking view of the Windward coastline. Once you get back on H1 East just follow the signs back to Waikiki. It takes approx. 6 hours to drive a car around the Island including stops for site seeing.

Check out our UNIQUE SERVICES to create an ultimate dream Hawaiian adventure!"My family and I went to Hawaii for 11 days in August 2000. We had a GREAT time! Thank you so much for your advises and suggestions. We took the "Circle Island Drive" at Oahu and got the Huli-Huli chicken. My two daughters are picky eaters. We all agreed that this is the best chicken we have ever tasted. We also "discovered" malasadas at the Bakery Leonard (933 Kapahulu Ave, Honolulu). These hot donuts were so yummy!"- D. Pham

Dole Pineapple Plantation

This activity receives our personal recommendation! The DOLE PINEAPPLE PLANTATION is a popular North Shore stop on the circle island drive.   There is a gift shop, pineapple gardens, and lots of pineapple goodies for sale. There are also many great photo opportunities at the Plantation. All over the grounds there are cut-outs you put your face in for funny pictures. A garden maze has recently opened at the plantation. It is two acres in size and 1.7 miles of paths snaking through hedges of heliconia, joyweed, panax, plumeria and hibiscus. In the center is a garden shaped like a pineapple. You clock in and have to find 6 checkpoints in order to complete the maze and clock out. You might win a prize if you have the best time. The maze is about $6 per adult and $4 per child 6-11. There is also a Pineapple Express train tour of the plantation for about $7.75 per adult, $5.75 per child 4-12.
