Locals and
tourists use scooters to get around Honolulu where there are many great landmarks and
scenic places to see. It's fun and easy to go exploring by scooter!

Diamond
Head is a short scoot from any Waikiki hotel. There is a nice scenic lookout just before
entering Diamond Head crater. Once you enter the crater you are able to park your scooters
and explore. Diamond Head has a 1 ¾ mile trail inside its'
crater that leads you to the crater rim. At the top of the rim are bunkers left from
W.W.II. Before you reach the bunker you must pass through an unlit tunnel (bring a small
flashlight if you have one) then climb a 99-step staircase that leads to the bunker. Your
hard work will be rewarded when you reach the top.
 |

View from Diamond Head Crater Rim |
You'll enjoy a birds-eye
view of the 3,520 foot-in-diameter crater, as well as the breath taking panoramic view of
the South Shore of Oahu. Morning hikes are best since there is no shade cover to protect
you from the afternoon sun. It gets very hot after 10am. Be sure to bring water on this
hike!!!! The average hiking time is 1½ hours. Directions: Start at Honolulu Zoo.
Follow Monsarrat Avenue (located next to the zoo) to the top. The entrance to Diamond Head
will be on your right. Go through the tunnel to the inside of the crater. The trail starts
near the restrooms.

Another awesome destination for scooters is Tantalus/Round Top
Drive. You drive through a lush green rain forest that opens to breathtaking panoramic
views of Diamond Head, Waikiki, Punchbowl crater, and Honolulu.

There are lots of great photo opportunities! It takes approx. 2 hrs
for this scenic drive with all the stops. Driving instructions: From Waikiki get on
Ala Wai Blvd., turn right on McCully Street and head towards the mountains. You will cross
a bridge over the H1 Lunalilo Freeway, after the bridge turn left onto Wilder Avenue.
Drive northwest and turn right on Makiki Street, at the 1st set of lights. Follow Makiki
Street up until you come to a Y and then take Round Top Drive the rest of the way. You
will end up going past the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl and will
come out into the business district of Honolulu.

Hanauma Bay, Oahu
If you are up for an all day scooter adventure you can head to a
sunken volcano known as HANAUMA BAY. It's a marine preserve packed with
sea life and the most popular place to go snorkeling on Oahu. At the bay you only need to
go ankle deep to see fish. This is a great place for fish viewing even if you don't
snorkel, or even swim. Much of the coral reef is dead due to ignorant reef visitors who
have damaged it. Please DO NOT walk on the reef!! Arrive before 10 AM for parking. Parking
is $1 entry to park is $3 per person. Snorkel gear rentals, showers, bathrooms, and an overpriced
snack bar are available in park. There are trolleys available for $0.75 per person to cart
you and your gear down or up the steep hill that leads from the parking area to the beach.
It is worth it for the ride up. This journey is a 10 mile scooter drive each way. Consider
that you will be riding for about an hour to the bay, then after enjoying several hours in
the sun, driving another hour back. You should wear plenty of waterproof sunscreen with an
SPF of 15 or more as well as loose clothing that will keep you cool and protect you from
the sun while driving. Driving instructions: From Waikiki head down Kalakaua Avenue
going past Kapiolani Park. Turn right onto Diamond Head Road. Near the end of this road
there will be a sign directing you to turn left to get to Route 72 East and Hanauma Bay.
Stay on Route 72 for several miles, there will be a sign on the right at the park's
entrance. Follow the signs to the bay.

Iolani Palace is the only royal palace on US soil. An
informative guided tour of the palace gives you a great insight how King David Kalakaua
lived. King David Kalakaua had the Palace built in 1882 to replace a smaller house on the
same grounds that was used as the Royal Palace. Queen Liliuokalani composed the famous
ballad "Aloha 'oe" while imprisoned at the palace at the time of the United
States overthrow of Hawaii's Monarchy.

Historic Downtown Honolulu is
a great destination on a scooter. In the downtown Honolulu area there's Iolani Palace,
Kamehameha Statue, Mission House Museum, and Aloha Tower among many very old and very new
buildings. From Waikiki head Ewa (away from Diamond Head) on Ala Moana Blvd. Aloha Tower
is about 2 1/2 miles from the Waikiki end of Ala Moana Blvd. Take a right on Alekea then a
right on Queen Street to get to the other historical landmarks in downtown Honolulu.

Site seeing by scooter is a fun and exhilarating adventure. You need to be over 18 years old with a valid
drivers license to rent a scooter. The maximum speed on scooter is only about 35 mph.
Scooters are fairly easy to get a hang of driving and rent for between $18-$25 per day in
Waikiki. Sunscreen is a
must if riding during the day, even if it's cloudy, because you will BURN!! It gets chilly
riding after the sun sets so you will need a light jacket if driving at night. Scooters are NOT for driving around the
island, it takes too long and you will be directly exposed to the sun! Scooters are very good on fuel. You can
ride all day and barely use up any gas. Scooters can be hard to see
from a car, so riders must all be responsible and drive with caution and courtesy to be
safe.
